World’s cheapest android tablet Aakash Ubislate 7 – is developed in partnership with the IIT(Indian Institute of Technology) Rajasthan and DataWind (UK Company). Aakash is developed aiming primarily at students of India, because of being a cheapest android tablet and the subsidy from Indian government Aakash tablet will surely be a huge success in India. Poor children who were not able to afford high priced computer devices can now use the Aakash and learn/find their way to success.

Cheap Datawind Aakash will be available for just $39 (£29) to students, and $60 (£39) to everyone else, making it the world’s cheapest android tablet by a healthy margin.

The tablet is about the size of a small diary and uses a resistive touchscreen, hence gestures will not work on it, but at the price it is given I don’t think that will be an issue for anyone.

Kapil Sibal, India’s HR development minister handed out 500 of the tablets to few lucky students for testing purpose, the government plans to distribute over 10 million units to students over the next couple of years in India.

“Our goal was to break the price barrier for computing and internet access. We’ve created a product that will finally bring affordable computing and internet access to the masses,” Sibal said when recently speaking about the tablets. “This is not only a concept that applies to India, but has ignited the imaginations of governments around the world. The Aakash is proudly made in India, and is destined to revolutionise computing and internet access for the world.”

- India has committed to 100,000 orders at the slightly increased price of $45 (£29), on the agreement that future orders will be for the lower $34 price.

- Aakash has been designed, developed, and manufactured by DataWind, a British company, in collaboration with IIT Rajasthan under the HRD Ministry’s National Mission on Education through Information & Communication Technology (NME-ICT). The HRD Ministry is buying 100,000 tablets from DataWind for Rs 2250 per unit inclusive of taxes and freight charges.

Datawind also intends to launch a slightly more expensive “commercial” version named the UbiSlate in December that will include a cellular modem, enabling it to access online content anywhere there is mobile phone reception. It will also enable the tablet to function as a mobile phone.

Note: The price difference between the Aakash and UbiSlate is down to the fact that the commercially available product will include a cellular modem, allowing it to deliver web access anywhere there is a cellular connectivity, and “also to function as a mobile phone”, DataWind said in a statement.
